About the Daly’s
From the very beginning picking up musical instruments was not a conscious decision for all six of Daly kids, who have grown up home-schooled in the Perth Hills. Generous friends and family passed on various musical instruments to what they hoped would be a good home, and indeed it turned out to be so.
Their very first music lessons had started with lessons from beloved Hilda Blakey, who they knew though the local Subud Perth group. Still now, they all share fond memories of finishing lessons and having afternoon tea of sugar bread and lemongrass tea overlooking her garden.
Steven who was aged 12, Mathew 11, Alexandra 9 with Margaret age 7, Samuel 3 and Elaina 2 years all wished to take on learning violin. Parents Leanne and Ethan sought out a teacher who would be so bold as to take on all the noisy Daly children, so contacted a violin teacher by the name of Gwyneth who saw their enthusiasm and felt moved to donate some of her time for free to enable them all to learn.
Affording lessons for six was a huge challenge even with her great generosity, so upon a crazy spontaneous idea they all tried busking to pay for a lesson. To their greatest surprise, all six out-of-tune and uncoordinated kids were met by the general public with unprecedented support and love. Throughout the years, the support from strangers though their donations of small change the Daly family raised enough money to fund violin and piano lessons as well as instruments for many years to come.
The more they played together, the better their sound became and constant public performances brought some wonderful gig opportunities. On the streets of the City of Perth they gained exposure to important people who brought them to perform at events like Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM, 2011) held in the Perth Council House where they met and performed for world leaders. They have also played for many WA Government meetings where they’ve met with, and performed for the Premier more than once.
Nowadays, the Daly family still live in the Perth Hills, still pursing music vehemently as ever with the intention of making it their careers. Steven (20) and Mathew (19) are both studying a Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from WA Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) who hold leader positions in the university’s orchestras. They also play in Perth Symphony Orchestra, and Fremantle Chamber Orchestra and teach students of their own. Elaina (10), Samuel (12) and Margaret (15) are all still homeschooled and study and practise furiously. Alexandra (17), a music teacher also, is currently neck deep in attaining a Year 12 and intending apply for WAAPA in the near future.
They all still enjoy playing together as often as they can, and their wish is to freely share music to everyone – as the generosity of others have brought them this far.
